COSCO has introduced a new LNG dual-fuel car carrier featuring solar panels, Yuan Hai Kou, capable of transporting 7,000 CEU.
The Yuan Hai Kou, is reportedly China’s largest ocean-going cargo ship powered by both solar energy and liquefied natural gas (LNG) and departed on its maiden voyage from Nansha, Guangzhou on 21 May.
The vessel is equipped with over 500 solar panels and generates about 410,000 kWh of electricity annually, enough to power onboard lighting, communications and other systems. As stated, this contributes to saving approximately 111 tons of fuel and cutting CO₂ emissions by around 345.9 tons per year.
In addition to its solar and LNG systems, the Yuan Hai Kou is also fitted with a medium-voltage shore power interface, enabling low-emission operations while at berth, aiming to reduce the vessel’s lifecycle carbon intensity by nearly 35% compared to conventional car carriers.
