Jeffrey Aldas: My seafaring career has been a transformative journey that shaped me into the person I am today. It’s a journey of endless horizons, adventure, and self-discovery. Beyond every contract lies the heartbeat of solidarity, shared laughter and enduring trials, forging connections as strong as our vessel’s steel. This blend of exploration, friendship, and challenges makes my every day at sea a cherished odyssey.

S4S: What have you learned over the course of your career at sea?

J.A.: Over my career at sea, I’ve learned resilience, adaptability, and the importance of teamwork. Navigating through diverse challenges not only enhanced my professional skills but also deepened my appreciation for the vital role we play in daily lives. I’ve experienced personal growth and gained an understanding of different cultures, maritime operations, and best practices essential for my career development.

S4S: How would you describe your daily life at sea/ work in a few words?

J.A.: It’s a tapestry of challenges and rewards, complemented with adventure and discovery. Each day demands vigilance and flexibility, offering moments of profound learning and self-reflection. I’ve found that with dedication and a clear sense of purpose, even amidst adversity, one can draw strength and inspiration to navigate the toughest of times.

S4S: What is the biggest challenge that you have to face on board?

J.A.: I believe the greatest challenge isn’t weathering storms or navigating perilous waters, but rather the persistent demand it imposes on my spirit as a seafarer. It’s a test of endurance and determination to overcome the ever-shifting tides and uncertainties of the sea that truly defines the challenges of this profession.

S4S: What is your piece of advice to fellow crew members onboard?

J.A.: To embrace teamwork, resilience, and will power. Respect the sea and each other, and prioritize safety above all. Cultivate a positive attitude and support one another, as unity is crucial for overcoming challenges and making life at sea rewarding and enjoyable. Let’s navigate the seas with courage, professionalism, and a shared sense of purpose.

S4S: What inspires you every day onboard?

J.A.: Every day at sea, my family’s thought fuels my determination to work tirelessly and ensure my safe return. However, it’s the harmonious relationship with my crewmates that breathes life into every journey. Their support not only inspires me to give my best every time but it reminds me that we’re stronger together and that anything is attainable through teamwork.

S4S: What has been the most extraordinary thing that you have experienced on board?

J.A.: It was witnessing the unwavering positivity we maintained despite the sea’s ordeals. Our collective dedication and mutual support turned challenges into triumphs. This shared spirit and optimism transformed every hardship into a cherished memory and each day into an extraordinary adventure.

S4S: What is the one thing that should change to make life better on board?

J.A.: I believe we should continue promoting inclusion and mutual understanding among seafarers. By encouraging them to treat each other well and embrace everyone’s differences, we create a supportive environment where everyone feels valued. This cultivates a stronger, more cohesive community built on trust and respect, making life at sea truly fulfilling.

S4S: What piece of advice would you give to someone thinking a career at sea?

J.A.: Embrace the adventure with courage and an open heart. Be flexible, driven, and ready to learn continuously. The sea will test you, but it will also reward you with unmatched experiences. Cherish every moment for life at sea is a unique journey of challenges, triumphs, and boundless possibilities.

S4S: What do you miss the most about your seagoing experience?

J.A.: What I miss dearly about my seafaring days is the daily routine of my work, the sway of the ship beneath underfoot, and the scent of salty breeze. Working with a diverse crew, exploring new countries, and the financial benefits unattainable through land-based job.

Life at sea is full of surprises especially when you are working in the engine room.
The extreme hot temperature and the noise will become music to your ear. The most important in order to maintain balance and harmony among the crew is to respect each other. As a team leader you need to be strong and resourceful during crisis or emergency. Value your crew and give them what is necessary to be a better one. Train them in all cases and create another leader among them.
