On 30 May, a collision occurred in the Western Scheldt in the southwestern Netherlands, involving the inland motor vessel Beringzee and the containership Containerships Nord.
As reported, following the collision, emergency response vessels from both Antwerp and the Netherlands were quickly dispatched, along with a Coast Guard helicopter.
The Beringzee, which was en route from Antwerp to Vlissingen with three crew members on board, sustained heavy damage due to the collision. According to the reports, two crew members were thrown overboard but were successfully rescued, with one suffering minor injuries while the third crew member was examined as a precaution.
Furthermore, the vessel was later stabilized with assistance from the inland vessels Kevalia and Verity, while several tugboats remained on-site to support the response.
A thin oil sheen was observed on the water, prompting the deployment of oil booms, though shipping traffic in the area remained operational.
Meanwhile, Containerships Nord which was bound for Dunkirk, was able to proceed but was ordered to anchor at Vlissingen Anchorage for inspection.
Authorities have since launched an investigation into the cause of the collision.
