The Smart Maritime Council (SMC) recently unveiled Version 1.0 of the Standardised Vessel Dataset (SVD) for Noon Reports.
The new version was released following a comprehensive 12-month consultation process involving key industry stakeholders such as BIMCO and IMO. This release incorporates numerous updates and refinements, including the integration of standardised IMO Data Numbers for over 100 common Noon Reporting data fields.
Version 1.0’s debut follows the earlier publication of a ‘beta’ version in February 2023, which served to gather feedback from a broader spectrum of industry participants before finalizing this official iteration.
Throughout the consultation period, the Council collaborated closely with BIMCO and IMO’s Expert Group on Data Harmonisation (EGDH). As part of this initiative, the IMO Compendium on Facilitation and Electronic Business (IMO Compendium) underwent expansion to encompass a variety of Noon Reporting data fields for the first time. Notably, the updated SVD aligns seamlessly with this new IMO model.
The IMO Compendium reference model represents a standardized compilation of data sets aimed at harmonizing formats for maritime digital information. Its latest iteration, informed by the 48th session of the IMO Facilitation Committee (FAL) in April 2024, includes a fresh list of Noon Reporting data points.
In Version 1.0 of the Standardised Vessel Dataset (SVD) for Noon Reports, each item now features four standardized elements:
- an IMO Data Number,
- a Data Element name,
- a Standard Unit,
- and a unique ISO 19848 ID tag.
These elements are directly linked to the official IMO reference model, establishing a robust, open, and non-proprietary list of standardized data points accessible to all stakeholders within the maritime industry.
Beyond ISO 19848, the SVD incorporates a range of existing standards, including UN LOCODE, IMO Code Lists, and various ISO reporting methods such as ISO 8601, ISO 6709, ISO 19018, and ISO 80000.
Ceataec, a member of the Smart Maritime Council affiliated with the Wilhelmsen Group, has developed an open-source library of free tools on GitHub to aid companies in implementing the standard within their digital projects.
Furthermore, maritime software companies are encouraged to contribute their own libraries to this open-source repository, facilitating easier connectivity for users or potential customers with standardized data sets, thereby eliminating the need for additional mapping or customization efforts.
