A Singapore-flagged container ship, MV Wan Hai 503, remains adrift approximately 42 nautical miles off the coast of Beypore, Kerala, within India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
The vessel is carrying 2,128 metric tonnes of fuel and hazardous cargo, raising serious concerns about a potential environmental disaster. The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has deployed extensive air and sea assets in an ongoing emergency response operation. Authorities report that while the fire on the vessel has been largely contained, inner decks continue to burn, posing ongoing risks.
The fire and explosions aboard the MV Wan Hai 503 occurred on June 9, 2025, in the late morning while the vessel was en route from Colombo to Mumbai. The incident unfolded about 78–88 nautical miles off Beypore, Kerala, with initial reports indicating the first blast struck around 10:30 am local time, followed by a growing fire in the underdeck areas
Aboard the vessel were 22 crew members when explosions and fire erupted on June 9, 2025, off the Kerala coast. Rescue efforts by the Indian Navy and Coast Guard successfully evacuated 18 crew, who were safely brought ashore. However, four remain missing.
Efforts to bring the situation under control have included winching salvors onboard to assist in towing the vessel. However, unfavourable sea conditions continue to hamper the firefighting and salvage operations.
Authorities confirm that the focus remains on fully extinguishing the fire and preventing any marine pollution or environmental fallout. The situation is being closely monitored, and further updates are expected as operations continue.
