Israel has jeopardized maritime safety by attacking Iranian energy infrastructure along the Persian Gulf coastline, a senior Iranian official stated on 18 June.

The revised guidelines, which were approved during MSC 100, are composed of six modules. Module 1 contains general information on fatigue while the remaining tackle with fatigue in relation to the company, seafarer, awareness and training, ship design, Administration and Port State Authorities.

Autonomous ship is a marine vessel with sensors, automated navigation, propulsion and auxiliary systems, with the necessary decision logic to follow mission plans, sense the environment, adjust mission execution according to the environment, and potentially operate without human intervention. The maritime industry benefits by autonomous vessels since the latter includes operational efficiency, human error reduction, emission reduction, increased safety, and operational cost reduction. 

Fuel quality and safety was high on the agenda during MSC 100 in early December. On the occasion, IUMI highlighted that biofuels are not properly catered for under the ISO standard 8217 and urged IMO to encourage ISO to embark on the urgent amendment of the ISO 8217 to deal with biofuels and the 2020 sulphur cap.

During previous sessions, the Goal-based ship construction standards for bulkers and oil tankers (GBS) were adopted, as well the initial verification of 12 Recognized Organizations. Now, MSC 100 confirmed that the information submitted regarding the maintenance of verification by those ROs aer complying with the Standards.

Along with a major focus on the regulatory scoping exercise for autonomous ships, the landmark 100th session of IMO's Maritime Safety Committee (MSC 100) held on 3-7 December, pushed further regulatory work on shipping safety, with the adoption of amendments to the SPS Code and the STCW Code, as well as the approval of draft amendments and guidelines. 

Discussing how to move forward with developing possible mandatory and recommendatory measures for ships operating in polar waters which are not currently covered by the Polar Code, IMO's MSC 100 agreed on a roadmap which could see revisions to SOLAS and/or the Polar Code considered for adoption in 2022.

IMO's MSC 100 approved revised guidelines on fatigue, which provide comprehensive information on the causes and consequences of fatigue, and the risks it poses to the safety and health of seafarers, operational safety, security and protection of the marine environment. The aim is to assist all stakeholders to contribute to the mitigation and management of fatigue.

The 100th session of IMO's Maritime Safety Committee (MSC 100) concluded on 7 December, approving the framework and methodology for the regulatory scoping exercise on Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS), following testing of the methodology by a correspondence group.

IMO MSC 100 completed its milestone 100th session on 7 December. MSC 100 had a busy agenda encompassing maritime autonomous surface ships, fatigue guidance for seafarers, polar shipping, goal-based standards and of course the 2020 sulphur cap.
